Your air conditioner is what helps keep you cool during the hot weather months. If your air conditioner has stopped working, you may not be able to relax as you would if you have a comfortable temperature in your home. A stifling home is not exactly relaxing, especially when the weather outside is just as hot. If your air conditioner has stopped working, there may be a few things you can do to get it working again. If you aren't comfortable working on your system at all, you should call a professional HVAC company to get your system working again. Read on for a few things you can do yourself.

Inspect The Unit

You should inspect the exterior unit to see if you can see anything visually wrong with the unit. If it appears dirty on the coils or on the fins of the unit, you need to spray them clean with a garden hose. The garden hose with a light spray should be enough to clean them, anything harsher will cause damage to the unit. Spray the fins to remove any debris stuck inside of them that may be blocking the flow of air to the system. Other things to look for include damage to the unit, anything that could be blocking the airflow to the system, or damage to the refrigerant line. If you see any damage that you aren't able to repair yourself, call a professional to help you.

Check For Leaks

If you aren't getting cool air coming out of your system, you could have a refrigerant leak, which you can check with bubbles on the refrigerant line. Use water on the line and look for any bubbling. If you see bubbles, you need to have refrigerant added to the unit and the line needs to be replaced, both of which need to be done by a professional HVAC technician. Refrigerant needs to be handled by a professional.

Inspect Your Thermostat

Check the thermostat for any issues, such as it not being connected properly, the temperature having been adjusted, or you could have another issue such as the thermostat not reading the temperature properly. Changing the thermostat may help you get your system running again.

If your A/C system has stopped running, there may be things you can do yourself in order to get it working again. If you are unable to find the problem and get it running again, call a professional to help you.
